How to Find and Verify Your NTN Number by CNIC

You may need to check an NTN for many reasons: an employer asks for it, a bank needs it, you want to confirm whether you registered years ago, or you want to verify a supplier before making a payment. In Pakistan, FBR offers online verification services that make this quick.

This article explains how NTNs work for individuals and businesses, how to verify one and what to do if the record is not found.

How NTNs work in Pakistan

  • Individuals: once registered on IRIS, the 13-digit CNIC is used as the NTN. Older registrations may also have a separate seven-digit reference number, but the CNIC is the primary identifier today.
  • Associations of persons (firms): receive a separate registration number.
  • Companies: receive their own registration number with FBR, separate from their directors.

How to verify an NTN online

  1. Visit FBR’s official website and open the online verification section.
  2. Choose the taxpayer profile inquiry or NTN verification option.
  3. Select the type of number (CNIC, NTN or registration number) and enter it.
  4. Complete the captcha and submit.
  5. If the person or business is registered, the result shows basic details such as name, registration number and registration status.

Checking whether you registered in the past

If you are not sure whether you ever registered, there are two simple checks:

  • Use the online verification with your CNIC. If a record appears, you are registered.
  • Try the forgotten-password option on IRIS with your CNIC. If IRIS recognises it, an account exists and you can recover it rather than registering again.

NTN verification and filer status are different

A record in the NTN verification only shows that a person or business is registered. It does not show whether they are an active filer. To check filer status, use the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) check, explained in our guide on how to check filer status.

Why businesses verify NTNs

Businesses often verify the NTN and filer status of suppliers, contractors and landlords because withholding tax rates depend on the recipient’s status. Verifying before payment helps the business deduct the correct amount and keep proper records for its own returns.

What to do if no record is found

You never registered

If no record exists, you need to register on IRIS. For individuals, this is done online with your CNIC, a mobile number in your own name and an email address. See our NTN registration service.

The number was entered incorrectly

Check that you entered the CNIC without dashes and selected the right type of number.

The business is registered under a different number

For firms and companies, verify with the registration number, not with a partner’s or director’s CNIC.

Keeping your registration details correct

Verification results reflect the information in your IRIS profile. If your name, address or business information is outdated, update it through a modification request on IRIS. Accurate details prevent problems with banks, clients and FBR correspondence.

Practical scenarios

An employer asks for your NTN

If you are an individual registered on IRIS, simply give your CNIC number; it is your NTN. If you are not registered, register first so that your employer can treat you correctly for withholding purposes.

A bank asks for your filer status

Verification of NTN only shows registration. The bank wants to know whether you are on the Active Taxpayer List, so check your ATL status and share that result.

You are paying a supplier

Verify the supplier’s NTN or registration number and their ATL status. This helps you deduct the correct withholding tax and supports your own records if FBR asks questions later.

You think you registered years ago

Many people were registered through employers or banks in the past. Verifying your CNIC or attempting a password reset tells you whether an account exists. If it does, recover it instead of registering again.

Understanding old and new NTN formats

Older registrations sometimes carried a separate seven-digit NTN with a check digit. Today, for individuals, the CNIC is the main identifier. If you have an old certificate with a seven-digit number, it still relates to the same taxpayer record. Businesses and companies continue to have their own registration numbers.

Checklist for accurate verification

  1. Enter the CNIC without dashes.
  2. Select the correct parameter type (CNIC, NTN or registration number).
  3. For firms and companies, use the entity’s number, not an owner’s CNIC.
  4. Compare the name in the result with the person or business you are dealing with.
  5. Save or print the result for your records if it is needed for a transaction.

Expert tips

  • Keep your registration certificate saved on your phone for quick sharing.
  • If the verification shows outdated details, update your IRIS profile.
  • Remember that registration and filer status are separate checks; banks and property offices care about the second.

Key terms explained

  • NTN: National Tax Number, the identifier FBR uses for a taxpayer. For individuals it is the CNIC.
  • Registration certificate: The document downloaded from IRIS confirming that a person or business is registered with FBR.
  • Taxpayer profile: The information held in IRIS about a taxpayer, including contact details, address and business activities.
  • ATL: Active Taxpayer List, the list of filers. Being registered is not the same as being on the ATL.
  • AOP: Association of persons, such as a partnership firm, which is registered separately from its members.
